Description
Crispy, buttery Southern Cheese Crackers made with sharp cheddar and cayenne. A savory, easy-to-make snack that’s perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1⁄2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 2–3 tablespoons cold water (if needed)
Instructions
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup and even baking.
Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the following:
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder (if using)
Mix until the dough begins to come together.
If it’s too crumbly, add cold water 1 tablespoon at a time until a cohesive dough forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
Roll the Dough
Lightly flour a work surface.
Roll the dough out to about 1/8 inch thick. Try to keep it even for uniform baking.
Cut the Crackers
Use a knife or cookie cutter to cut into desired shapes—squares, rounds, or festive shapes.
Transfer each piece to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
Bake
Place in the oven and bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the crackers are crisp.
Rotate the pan halfway through for even browning.
Cool and Serve
Remove from oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes.
Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Enjoy immediately or store for later.
Notes
Dough can be prepared up to 2 days in advance and refrigerated.
Avoid overworking the dough—it may toughen the crackers.
For extra bite, sprinkle flaky salt on top before baking.
If using salted butter, reduce added salt slightly.
